The Majors Champion is the winner of the Majors Division, or selected from the middle of the contestant field as their finishing final positions in a single division tournament.

When the mid place finishers is a non-resident then the next place NC finisher above him is selected. Only a NC residences may be a NC Championship title holder. Rules

Players were welcomed to Econo Lodge - Burlington by a nice front desk counter display sign announcing: Welcome!! 125th NC Open State Checker Tournament "In Memory of Cecil C. Lowe" Playing in Conference Room 247.

Teal Stanley, NCCA President opened the meeting by call on our District 4 Manager, Larry Michael for our tournament invocation before opening our 125th Annual 2015 North Carolina Checker Association business meeting. The meeting was call to order at 9:02am Friday, May 15th in the Econo Lodge Hotel conference room 247. Members in attendance: 8 NCCA Life-Time members were present: John Webster, Jeff Webster, Tim Laverty, Teal Stanley, JR Smith, Bobby Gerringer, Larry Michael, and Ted Taylor all from North Carolina except Taylor who is from Tazewell, VA. We had 6 other NCCA members: Glenn Fuquay, Grover Minor, Morris Auman, George Cox, Rocky Troxler, and Rockie Swift from NC. There were 7 out of state players: Alex Moiseyev, Mike Choate, Matthew Clark, Lovetta Currence, Ryan Pronk, Ken Shultz, and Lynn Steelman making a total of 21 players present. We miss the 4-5 Ohio Amish player who planned to attend but because of a funeral they couldn't make it.

Teal Stanley welcomed 21 players to the 125th Annual 2015 North Carolina Open Checker Tournament from 6 States: 13 from NC; 2 from TN & VA: 1 from GA, OH, SC, & WV. We especially appreciate and welcome Alex Moiseyev from Dublin, OH a 470 mile and 8 hour trip, and Lynn Steelman who drove up from Crandall, GA to Madisonville, TN to pick up Mike Choate and then drove into Greensboro, a 370 mile or 7 hour trip.

Teal, called for Secretary JR Smith to read last years minutes which were preprinted and available to members. Smith reviewed the 2014 minutes which were approved as presented and read.

Announcements: JR Smith spoke about this year's tournament being in memory of Cecil Lowe which posters were on the wall telling about his dedicated services to NCCA. Other announcement were displayed as well: Up coming Checker Tournaments, Tournament Schedules and Rules, Financial Reports, Advertisement for Branson Mixer, 2015 GAYP National, Contribution list for both NC Open, and GAYP National, NCCA State Champion List, List of Restaurants, 10/14/12 News-Record article about John Webster. A Sympathy card was signed by players for Bill Salot's wife Louise, and also a Caring & Thinking of You card to Vonda Jones for her husband Otis who has stage 4 cancer. Larry Michael announced that EG McQueen's library was for sale. John Webster announced Mt. Carmel UMC Fundraiser & Benefit Bluegrass Gospel Festival, June 6, 2015 to help rebuild their sanctuary destroyed by fire on 2/20/2015.
Smith announced: We will remember recent deaths of our NC Checker Players and others we played against: Edward Carol “Ed” King died April 30, 2015, Lawrence W. Newsom died April 1, 2015, Bill Salot's wife Louise died March 12, 2015, Earl Allen Morrison died February 17, 2015, William “Bill” Williams died January 22, 2015 he was an internet player. We lost: Chris Weiland 10/11/14, Clifford Daniels 9/27/14, Dale Hedrick 9/24/14, Raleigh Johnson 8/19/14, Mary Ellen Yoder 6/26/14, Roy Harbin 6/11/14, Earl Hagen 4/28/14, George Parker, Jr. 4/23/14, John Toms 4/7/14, Dr. Robert Shuffett, Green County, KY - 4/1/2014, and Maxine Helterbrand 2/16/14.

Financial Reporting: JR Smith, acting as NCCA Treasurer, as Mike Ross's assistant, reported on the financial status of our security accounts, saying the RBC balance was $14,814.22 as of EOY December, 2014, and the Edward Jones account was $13,967.29 for the combined total of $28,781.51 as of 12/31/2014.. Smith stated that our most current statements as of 4/30/2015 shows Edward Jones as $14,498.41 and RBC as $15,011.85 for a combined total of $29,510.26 before this year's $1,500 tournament prize fund withdrawal. We took $850.00 from EJ and $650.00 from RBC for a total of $1,500.00 which balanced withdrawal amounts from both accounts from their inception. Our fund account objective hasn't changed which produces dividends and interest near what we have withdrawn each year. We are in fair shape considering the market swings, we are in mutual funds, corporate bond funds, and ETFs that offers safety with fair dividends and interest, which is much higher than we would be getting from CDs. The shares' value might fluctuate a little with the market but we are not concentrating as much on growth but after safety and yield. Smith also had printed statements of NCCA fund accounts for anyone who wanted a copy. He also said our 2014 Federal Tax Return (990) was filed 1/15/2015. Two other reports were available: a list of tournament withdrawals and yearly history of the fund accounts. Smith also reported that IRS announced in their EO Update / e-News for Charities & Nonprofits electronic newsletter they were expecting to introduce their newly revised Form 1023 & instructional tutorial and also introducing Form 1023-EZ (application for exemption status) and a reduced application fee based on gross assets and gross income in June 2015 which would save NCCA on our application filing fee of $400 which formerly was $1,000.

Election of officers: We voted to keep the current officers another year. Teal-president, Jeff-vice-president, JR-secretary, and Mike-treasurer.

We discussed under topic New Business to play a single division instead of our planned three divisions and set the entry fee at $20.00 for this division as our 2015 NC State Open because of the number of entrants and reduce the necessity of repairing. We will use the mid-field player's finish position as our Majors Champion as we have done in the past when there wasn't enough players to have multiple divisions. Tournament Playing Rules were posted on the bulletin board, as well as: tournament schedule, pay-out schedule, up coming checker tournaments, a list of all the NC State Champions, and a list of local restaurants were all there on the playing room wall.

Time clocks, game recorder sheets, and extra pens were available on the back table for those players who wanted them.

We realize the 1500s & 1600s will most likely be paired with 1800s or 2100 players by luck of the draw and have little chance of drawing, but the modified Swiss pairing will adjust as the tournament progresses. Personally I think it's more unfair for a 1500 to play a 2100 than for two 2100s to be repaired 2 or 3 times. Our rating system should take this into consideration but it doesn't. Hopefully someday there will be enough players to field a bracket or division of closer rated players and enough player it wouldn't be necessary to repair. Until this happen you must improve so you can play with the best.

Smith also announced, Next year's 126^thAnnual 2016 North Carolina Open Checker Tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 13^th & 14^th 2016. This is in keeping with the State Tournament dates as in the past, the first weekend after Mother's Day which is the second Sunday in May. This tournament will be named “In honor of Clint Pickard - Tournament Honoree” in honor and gratitude for his service as our past District 4 Manager and as a past NCCA Treasurer which he held both for 22 years.

Adjournment: Our meeting adjourned at 9:27am and a copy of the Financial Report, Annual Report, and Minutes are available to members on-line. We started our 2015 NC State Open Tournament at 9:30am in the same conference room.

We appreciated the donations and contributions which with the entry fees and fund account withdrawals totaled $2,350.00. Normally we deposit the withdrawn player’s cash in next year’s tournament fund account.

NCCA Life-Time Members are exempt of any State Tournament entry fees, one of the huge benefits of being a life-time member.

We welcome our new tournament players: George Cox, Rockie Troxler, and Rocky Swift. George's dad, William Cox use to be a regular at our NC tourneys, and John Webster mentioned he remembered playing William 50 years ago.

5 new or renewal ACF Memberships were collected at registration.

Our oldest player was Grover Minor age 83 with a birthday on July 14th which will make his 84th, beating out George Cox by eight months who had his 83rd birthday, March 30th this year. Our youngest player was Ryan Pronk age 29. Our prettiest player was Lovetta Currence! This doesn't happen often when we get to recognize a lady player.

We appreciate Gayle Smith who made sure we had plenty of water, drinks, fruit salad, chips, dips, veggie trays, cheese & crackers, etc. available throughout the tournament. We also appreciate the Pizza dinner party Friday evening which all players, family & friends were invited. It seems the pizza, finger foods, salsa, & salads were hits with the players. Teal Stanley arranged for the Pizza Hut Pizza and drinks Friday evening. We appreciated these delightful treats!

Mike Ross visited the tournament Saturday afternoon after finishing up early from selling honey & produce at the Famer's Market.

We appreciate Tim Laverty officiating as score-keeper and tournament referee, and of course doing a fantastic job as usual.

Referee Tim Laverty gave a forfeit for Morris Auman's fifth round and withdrawals for the remainder of rounds. Glenn Fuquay's seventh round was a forfeit.

NCCA has a tournament policy requiring a player to finish the tournament in order to get their prize money. We don't pay a cash prize to withdrawals; however, there have been exceptions when a player had to leave the last round and performed exceptionally well in his class, so we have awarded the player by forwarding the prize to him. The payout reflected in the results cross table was adjusted to handle this situation. The scorekeeper drops the withdrawn player or players to the bottom which has no effect on their rating. Their rating is figured only from their performance from games they actually played with another rated player.

We appreciate Econo Lodge for hosting our tournament, their meeting room, and free coffee throughout our tournament.

This year's tournament was announced in Americantowns Greensboro News-Record GoTriad Scene and a 2015 Flyer was mailed out.

A good group of checker player met Thursday evening at McDonald's in Stony Creek Mall - 6401 Burlington Rd, Whitsett, NC 27377 for a practice session the evening before the tournament. Jonathan Chappell, Teal Stanley, Rockie Troxler, Mike Ross, Mike Choate, Lynn Steelman, John Greene, Glenn Fuquay, JR Smith were some of the players.

A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended.
